The Three Courtyards

Walk through the main defensive enclosures that lead up to the high rocky towers of Belogradchik Fortress.

The fortress is divided into three distinct courtyards separated by thick defensive walls. These lower areas show how Roman, Bulgarian, and Ottoman builders adapted their architecture to the natural sandstone cliffs.

As you move through these enclosures, you will see how the defensive layout evolved over time. The current structure primarily dates back to a major Ottoman reconstruction in the early 19th century.

Vidin Kapia and Niš Kapia

10 minutes19th-century gates

These are the two main defensive gates added during the early 19th-century Ottoman reconstruction. They guard the entrance to the lower enclosures. Look closely at the walls to observe the embrasures and cannon loopholes designed for defense.

The Lower Courtyard

20 minutesAccessible flat area

This is the most accessible, flat area of the fortress right after you enter. It offers plenty of space to walk around before the steep climb begins. Every summer, this courtyard transforms into an open-air stage for an opera festival.

The Middle Courtyard

15 minutesArchitecture meets nature

This intermediate defensive level bridges the gap between the lower grounds and the towering rocks. Here, stone walls physically connect to the natural cliffs. It is a clear example of how Roman and later builders integrated their forts into the landscape.
